The 2026 Toyota Hilux: Legendary Toughness Meets Electric Power

by Shaun costello 04 Feb 2026

The Hilux name has always meant strength, reliability and usable capability. For 2026, the ninth‑generation model adds something big to that formula: electrification. Toyota is introducing its first battery‑electric Hilux alongside an electrified diesel, with a hydrogen fuel cell version confirmed to follow in 2028. UK sales are due to start in June 2026, with detailed specifications and pricing to be announced closer to launch.

A bolder look and a smarter cabin

The latest Hilux arrives with a clean, confident face, slimmer LED headlamps and a wide central front treatment that gives it real presence. The battery‑electric model adopts a smooth, grille‑less design and its own aero‑optimised alloys to boost efficiency. Practical touches continue at the back, where all versions gain a handy deck step to make loading and unloading easier. For the UK, Toyota has simplified the range to the most popular body style: Double Cab.

2026 Toyota Hilux interior

Climb inside and you’ll spot a sizeable upgrade in comfort and tech. Inspired by Toyota’s latest Land Cruiser, the dashboard has a horizontal layout with better materials and ergonomics. Depending on grade, drivers get a 12.3‑inch digital instrument display paired with a 12.3‑inch central touchscreen. There’s enhanced connectivity too, including wireless charging and additional USB ports for rear passengers. Off‑road controls and the all‑wheel‑drive selector are grouped centrally for straightforward operation. The electric Hilux introduces a smooth, shift‑by‑wire selector, and for the first time in Western Europe, the model features electric power steering to sharpen manoeuvrability both on and off the beaten path.

Powertrains to suit every job

Toyota’s multi‑path approach means the new Hilux is built around choice. Whether you want zero tailpipe emissions for urban sites, familiar diesel torque with mild‑hybrid efficiency, or a future hydrogen option, there is a solution on the way.

Hilux Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV)

  • 59.2 kWh lithium‑ion battery feeding front and rear e‑axles for permanent all‑wheel drive
  • Torque outputs of 205 Nm at the front and 268.6 Nm at the rear
  • Approximate payload of 715 kg and up to 1,600 kg towing
  • Target WLTP range around 150 miles prior to final homologation
  • Maintains the diesel model’s 700 mm wading depth
  • Multi‑Terrain Select for adaptable traction off road

Crucially, the electric Hilux keeps the model’s proven body‑on‑frame construction for strength and durability. Underbody protection shields the battery from impacts and water ingress so it can work as hard as it needs to.

2026 Toyota Hilux BEV

Hilux 2.8D 48V (Mild‑Hybrid Diesel)

  • 2.8‑litre diesel paired with a 48‑volt lithium‑ion hybrid system
  • Hybrid components are packaged beneath the rear seats to preserve cabin space
  • Smoother, quieter running with improved efficiency
  • Payloads up to one tonne and towing up to 3,500 kg
  • Full off‑road capability retained, including 700 mm wading depth
  • Multi‑Terrain Select and Multi‑Terrain Monitor available

Production of the 2.8D 48V begins in spring 2026 and it is expected to be the volume seller for the UK and Western Europe.

Hilux Hydrogen Fuel Cell (from 2028)
Toyota has confirmed a hydrogen fuel cell Hilux is in the pipeline for 2028. Developed in the UK, it underscores the brand’s commitment to hydrogen as a clean‑energy solution and supports the build‑out of refuelling infrastructure across Europe.

Safety, assistance and always‑on updates

The 2026 Hilux debuts Toyota’s most advanced driver assistance and safety suite yet. Highlights include Low Speed Acceleration Suppression, Proactive Driving Assist and an Emergency Driving Stop System. There’s also Blind Spot Monitoring, Safe Exit Assist and a Driver Monitor Camera, plus over‑the‑air software updates to keep systems current. For connected users and fleets, Toyota’s companion app can show vehicle location, fuel or charge status and journey data, while fleet managers can view multiple vehicles at a glance to streamline operations.
